Czech Republic = The country of Beers

"Já si dám pivo!" Learn it because it might be of real utility when you will spend some time in the Czech republic and you will get a nice smile back and most important you will get a fresh and original Czech beer in less than 1 minute.

The beer in the Czech republic has long and storied history, and it is not a coincidence that Czech republic is the highest annual per capite consumption of beer in the entire world. (Consider that Czech republic has about 10 millions inhabitants and it has a higher score that Germany!!!)

The first brewery is known to have existed in Brevnov Monastery in 993.

The city of Brno was the first one to have the right to brew beer in the XII century and Plzen and Ceske Budejovice are the two most important cities in the country for beer. Most of the towns have their own brewery, but the most famous ones are in Bohemia: Budweis, Plzen and Prague.

The most famous brand of beers are the following:  Pilsner Urquell, Budweiser Budvar, Gambrinus, Radegast, Krusovice, Velkopopovicky Kozel, Staropramen, Starobrno, Bernard and Svijany.

The most famous Czech beer is the pale lager of pilsner type, but according to Czech law, categories of beers, regardless of colour or style, are:
  • lehké - a "light" beer brewed below 8° Balling and with less than 130kJ per 100ml
  • výčepní - "tap" beer, though it can be bottled, brewed between 8° and 10°
  • ležák - "lager" beer, brewed between 11° and 12.99°
  • premium - "special" beer, brewed above 13°

Briefly:

BEER IN PRAGUE: Staropramen

BEER IN PLZEN:  Pilsner Urquell (IT was the first "pilsner" type beer in the world), Gambrinus and Primus.

BEER IN BRNO AND SOUTH MORAVIA: Starobrno and Cerna Hora

BEER IN CESKE BUDEJOVICE:
Today the city has two main breweries: Budějovický měšťanský pivovar a.s.and Budějovický Budvar n.p. (Budweiser Budvar)

In 1876, the US brewer Anheuser-Busch began making a beer which was also named "Budweiser." This led to the "Budweiser trademark dispute" between beer companies claiming trademarks rights to the name "Budweiser."
In the European Union, Budějovický Budvar is recognized as a product with Protected Geographical Indication. Because of such disputes, Budvar is sold in the United States and Canada under the label Czechvar and according to the verdict of Court of Justice of the European Union in July 2010, Czech Budweiser Budvar has exclusive control over the Budweiser brand name in the whole European Union.

Outdoor Prague Entertainments - Parks and Gardens

Finally the spring has arrived in Prague as well and  the need of enjoying the outdoor, the nature and the many entertainmentsthat the city offers is widespreading pretty fast. Winter was long and now with the first warm temperatures and sun, touristic but most of all locals are finally filling the numerous outdoor pub, beer gardens, parks, etc. and Prague has a very wide offer and we are here to give you some good suggestions!

All the following are easily reachable either you are a local or a tourist.

Close to the river banks you will find different options to spend some time on fresh air, sipping a Czech beer or simply enjoying the view: many boats are just anchored and offer bar service but here is a very not-to-miss place and one of our favourite (a little internal survey helped to make out this list!)

KRISTIAN MARCO - Smetanovo nabrezi. Prague 1

Between Karlovy Lazne and the National Theatre, you will find these stairs going down to this wonderful terrace on the river bank with a breathtaking view to the Prague Castle: beer, wine, grilled food and live music mnake this place one of the favourite venues of both locals and tourists. Perfect picture spot!

LETNA PARK BEER GARDEN - Letna. Prague 7

Wonderful view to Prague city and a nice park where to enjoy walks, online skating and ideal place to stay with children. Do not miss the Metronom and the skaters shows!

RIEGROVY SADY - Zizkov. Prague 3

One of the most famous park in Prague where to enjoy glimpses of Prague, seated area where to enjoy beers if you do not want to lay on the grass, nice restaurant where to have grilled meat and other small appetizers to accompany your beer. Perfect for evening nights, you will find here many locals and expats residents. In the beer garden they have a big screen where you can follow sport events. Sensational.

PARUKARKA PARK - Zizkov. Prague 3

This park might not have as many seats as other bigger beer garden in Prague, however this does not have to do a disadvantage since you can take a seatr anywhee in the park, bring a blanket, buy yourself a beer and enjoy one of the best view of Prague.
It is a perfect place where to stay and play outdoor games with friends. This park is frequented from all kinds of people, and usually their dogs. By giving a deposit of 50 kc they give you a glass so you do not have to use the plastic one. Kind of a good idea no?

HAVLICKOVY SADY - Vinohrady. Prague 2

We have already talked about this place in other posts so we might know this place already but here is the restaurant and very cosy place where to spend a nice sunny afternoon "Vinicni altar". Rose wine and cheeses are not to miss ones.

And now a romantic spot just outside the buzz of the city: THE PRUHONICE PARK

The natural parke measure about 250 hectares and it was founded in 1885 by the Count Arnost Emanuel Silva - Tarouca. The park is valuable from the dendrological point of view with its collection of about 1600 species of local and exotic plants. The collection of rhododendrons is particularly unique - about 8000.

Tell us which are your favourite! This is our list but we will be more than welcome to update it and discover new ones.

Stay tuned and enjoy spring time in Prague!

Do you go GREEN?

What do we do to go GREEN?

We would like to take this occasion to promote ourselves since this has been the first year we have been participating to the yearly worldwide event EARTH HOUR.
As many of you know, it was last March 23rd and took place...everywhere! And we were a part of this in Prague and in Marianske Lazne with our hotels.
The Association of Hotels and Restaurant of the Czech Republic - AHR CR , of which we are proud member since the beginning of this year, invited all its members to take part to the Earth Hour involving our staff and guests.

We have involved most of our hotels:

Hotel Green Lobster and Hotel Bijou de Prague

Hotel Raffaello

Hotel Tyl

Hotel Residence Mala Strana

Hotel Continental in Marianske Lazne, where our guests enjoyed their meal at candlelight in our restaurants.

The aim is to encourage households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the climate changing.

Prague

More pictures about the event can be found on our Flickr page Flickr - Garzotto Hotels and Resorts

But what do Garzotto Hotels and Resorts do all over the year to stay GREEN? Well, we do our best and here are some GREEN GUIDELINES that we try to follow strictly:

- all our hotels are non-smoking (only one of them has a very limited smoking are still)

- all private and public areas are lighted with energy-efficient lightning

- paper saving and recycling in offices and departments

- bulk soap and amenities instead of individual packages  to reduce waste (with exception of one hotel in our chain)

-  towel and sheets re-use:  we invite our guests to leave these slightly used items to reduce water consumption

- we re-use old tablecloths and cloth napking for internal use and housekeeping

Any suggestions? We will defintely continuing doing our best and we hope we could encourage our guests all over the year to adopt these guidelines and others in their everyday life
